The air has gotten cooler. Humidity is nothing but a bad memory and for most people the new school year is underway.
At The Sherlock Conversations, one of our goals is to spread the word about getting kids excited about reading! Especially anything that has a Sherlockian theme too it. We advocated the importance of reading to your kids! Remember when we talked about that here?
So when kids need a break from studying and you want them to put down their video games, toys and so forth, we have something for them that is easily just as entertaining as anything on a computer or hand-held device!
Y’see recently, two friends of the Sherlock Conversations announced two new projects! And we wanted to highlight ’em!
F.C. SHAW – SHERLOCK ACADEMY: THE HOLMES BRIGADE
This book three in her Sherlock Academy series. (SIDENOTE: She also announced on Facebook she is expecting her third child! This is a year of “threes” for Mrs. Shaw!)
Think Sherlock Holmes with a Harry Potter twist too it. Last year we talked to Mrs. Shaw about the inspiration for her books. You can check it out here.
So what is “The Holmes Brigade” about:
In book 3 of the Sherlock Academy series, Sherlock Academy is out for Christmas break, but Rollie and Cecily are ready to solve their third mystery. When Rollie finds a letter in his great aunt’s study questioning his decision to attend Sherlock Academy, he confronts her and finds out that his aunt can be just as determined and stubborn as he is about keeping secrets. Aunt Ei’s secretive manners aren’t the only mystery brewing: an agent from Scotland Yard and Wesley arrive at Rollie’s house for protection, having just barely escaped from the clutches of Herr Zilch’s henchmen. Even with the fun of friends and the holiday, Rollie still spies strange happenings at Herr Zilch’s old mansion and goes with Cecily and Wesley to investigate. Between his grumpy aunt, protecting Wesley, and exploring Zilch’s mansion, Rollie holiday turns out to be more than he expected.

PAULA BERINSTEIN – AMANDA LESTER AND THE PINK SUGAR CONSPIRACY (VOLUME 1)(AUDIO)
So Amanda Lester is the descendant of Scotland Yard Inspector Lestrade. While he did not have the best of reputations, he was still an associate of Sherlock and now, Amanda, continues the detective work.
In the series is Amanda Lester and the Orange Crystal Crisis (Amanda Lester, Detective) (Volume 2), Amanda Lester and the Purple Rainbow Puzzle (Amanda Lester, Detective) (Volume 3), Amanda Lester and the Blue Peacocks’ Secret (Amanda Lester, Detective Book 4) and Amanda Lester and the Red Spider Rumpus (Amanda Lester, Detective Book 5) which is due out in November.
While chatting online, I asked Paula Berinstein, “How cool it is to hear your book dramatized?”
She said she was thrilled. “It is amazing!” she said. (Also check out are previous interview here).
“I will be sending out a newsletter with more about the audiobook [of book one],” she said. “But I have to tell you that Allan Corduner is the most amazing narrator ever. He really has a golden voice.”
And you can hear for yourself by clicking here.
So what is the AMANDA LESTER AND THE PINK SUGAR CONSPIRACY about?
A reluctant detective, a criminal mastermind, and sugar?
Amanda Lester wouldn’t be caught dead going into the family business. Her ancestor, Sherlock Holmes’s colleague Inspector G. Lestrade, is a twit. Nevertheless her parents refuse to see his flaws, and she’s going to a secret English school for the descendants of famous detectives whether she likes it or not.
When Amanda arrives at the dreaded school, she considers running away – until she and her new friends discover blood and weird pink substances in odd places. At first they’re not sure whether these oddities mean anything, but when Amanda’s father disappears and the cook is found dead with her head in a bag of sugar, they’re certain that crimes are taking place.
Now Amanda must embrace her destiny and uncover the truth. The only snag is that arch-villain Blixus Moriarty, a descendant of Holmes’s nemesis Professor James Moriarty, might be involved, and he doesn’t like nosy little girls interfering in his business.
